JOURNEY TO MT KAILAS

Cultural Touring/Strenuous Trekking

Tibet - China

Rising majestically above the Tibetan Plateau, Mount Kailas has been the destination of both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims for centuries. Although some pilgrims make the 52-kilometre circuit in one day, we will approach the circumnavigation over four days, allowing for a very enjoyable and rewarding journey. We will meet nomads, shepherds, and pilgrims from around the region who have come to this area not only to visit Kailas, but also to trade salt, wool and various goods. Our departure is designed to take advantage of the festival of Saka Dawa, or the celebration of Buddha's birthday. Culturally fascinating and aesthetically striking, this adventurous trek will take you to some of the most remote areas left in this corner of the world.

Tibetan Buddhists believe that while one trek, or kora, around Mt. Kailas will wash away the sins of one life, 108 circuits secures Nirvana in this life! Our own journey begins in the remote Humla district of western Nepal where, in the city of Simikot, you will encounter the ethnic cultures of Thakuris and Chhetris.

From Simikot, we will trek across the border into Tibet; a trekking route that has only recently opened to tourists. We will meet nomads, shepherds, and pilgrims from around the region who have come to this area not only to visit Kailas, but also to trade salt, wool and various Indian goods. Life for these nomads, referred to as Bhotias, has been unchanged for centuries. Because of their Tibetian roots, they are still allowed to roam freely while grazing their animals on the high Tibetian plateau.

Traveling upon the high Tibetian plateau, to a maximum elevation of 18,475ft, this trip circumnavigates the 22,028ft/6608meter Mt. Kailas in four days. A feat often accomplished by Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims in one. Our more relaxed pace leaves ample time for enjoying this journey while reflecting on what the pilgrims have seen for centuries.

Our departure is designed to take advantage of the festival of Saga Dawa, or the celebration of Buddha's birthday. By visiting this important spiritual area during this time, we will be fortunate to share the celebration with other pilgrims from the region. Culturally fascinating and aesthetically striking, this adventurous trek will take you to some of the most remote areas left in this fascinating corner of the world.
